Final Essay
I have learned many new skills and techniques this semester. Second semester was my first semester in advanced/intermediate ceramics. At the beginning of the year I struggled with centering and pulling up on the wall. Towards the end of the year my projects were a lot more unified as a whole and looked like more effort was put into them as my skills grew.
For my theme I decided to use the element of pattern and design. In each of my projects I added some sort of design to give it more depth. I experimented with the detail stains, to give the projects more color, as well as chips of glass and rock to give texture. To give a project a more defined look I used tape for distinct lines. I also used white glaze on top of a purple glaze to make it run to give it movement. Lastly, for my cup with pulled handle I used thick clear glaze to cover the entire project, then after it dried, I chipped of some sections of it so that when it came out of the glaze it has a textured surface.
I made three bowls/cylinders using the detail glaze to give it a watercolor look. I made a planted with drak blue detail stain all along the edges so that the pattern would be unified. I also used the technique of repeating a pattern on my two plates and various bowls to bring or tie the project together for a distinct look.
Some projects have specific detail on them such as the butterfly on the bowl, but for the most part they are all covered with some sort of detailed glaze. I also used cut outs for detail, and kept the surface with only detail glaze, for a balance of design.
I was surprised at how the quality of a project could change very easily on the decision to dedicate more time into a project. When I slowed down and really focused on a project and came up with a vision and specific idea, the project came out a lot more unified and I was happy with it.

Throughout the entire year that I have been in ceramics I've learned multiple skills and techniques that have been reflected in my projects as the year has gone on. Towards the beginning I used a lot of solid colors. By the end of the year o used detail, pattern and design in about every project.
I focused on learned how to pull up on the wall of a project so that the result would be more unified. I also worked on my footing skills. As these skills grew I became more creative in making my projects using multiple colors and techniques.
The bulk of the projects that I have made have been bowls or cylinders. I started to experiment with porciline and red clay as well. I made two plates and a few cups with pulled handles. I made two planters also. Some techniques that I used was carving, making the glazes run and using stain to give design on the surface. After finding that detailing was my strong suit, I decided to make pattern and design my theme.
